Visit Your Campbell River Museum
Events & Exhibits — By Lawrence Lewis on January 21, 2010 at 8:00 pmAward Winning Exhibits…
Our award winning permanent exhibits feature First Nations history – including the intriguing and unique underwater legend coming to life in a multi media theatre with 24 commissioned spectacular masks. Open, interactive exhibits tell the story of our coastal lifestyle of the region through logging, fishing and pioneer life. Our Changing gallery features short term, specialty exhibits.
A stroll outside includes a 37′ cod fishing boat (circa 1939) with a poignant history, a restored Steam Donkey, (a logging workhorse circa 1916) and native plant gardens with over 80 species of indigenous plants.
Special events and programs are on offered year round, for all ages. Perennial favourites include Tracks & Trains for railroad model enthusiasts and our fall Steamin’ Days. Summer programs include history based boat tours of our waterways and rarely seen live puppet theatre written on local events and people.
During the school season, the Museum resonates with the sound of children’s voices as they partake in instructional hands on activities offered through our school programs (K to 12).
Providing Resources…
As a regional Museum, we are a tremendous resource for information on the early years of the area. The Museum specializes in human history and in the Archives library, you will find an amazing collection of books, articles and photos to help you with your research, or if you are simply interested in local history feel free to come and visit. Knowledgeable Museum staff and volunteers are on hand to assist you.
History based videos range from ‘Fishing for Tyee’ (1933) to ‘Petroglyphs on the BC Coast’ (1987) with over 50 in total. In addition, the Museum produced a quartette of videos entitled ‘The Women of Northern Vancouver Island, 1915-1945′. Our website also has online resources on the history of sport fishing, commercial fishing, aviation and mining.
