Night Hikes with the Museum

Events & Exhibits — By Catherine Gilbert on February 5, 2010 at 2:15 pm

You are in the woods at night and something is rustling in the bush.  Your heart starts racing as you shine your flashlight into the dark.  Two eyes are reflecting back at you!  What is it?!  Did you know that by learning the reflective colours of animals eyes, you can identify what is staring back?

The Museum at Campbell River is offering a unique opportunity to learn and experience the forest at night   On Friday, February 26,  from 6:00-7:30 pm, join night hiking experts the ‘TreeTravellers’ on a night trek into the Beaver Lodge Trails.

Learn how to spot cougars and identify animals by the colour of their reflective eyes.  Meet deer, bats, and owls. Key points will be the visibility of tracks, changes in plants at night, and ease of spotting some of the more unusual fungus and insects.

Learn what ‘moves in the dark’ and discover why some places and times are at their best during the winter at night.  Hikers need to dress appropriately for outdoor nighttime conditions. Flashlights are available but it is strongly suggested that you bring your own LED headlamp.  The cost for the hike is $20.00.

To register for this intriguing exploration please call the Museum at 287-3103.

The next Night Hike will take place on Friday, March 19.

Good ideas. I wish I could be there, but will pass it on to some other people who may be interested.

Glad to hear you like the idea and will pass it on. There will be a second hike February 26, and perhaps more as interest grows?
