Intertidal Walk Along Willow Point Shore
Events & Exhibits — By Catherine Gilbert on May 12, 2010 at 1:10 pmPriceless tidal treasures exposed for all eyes! Enjoy the beauty of intertidal life during one of the lowest tides of the year. The Museum at Campbell River will offer a guided walk along the intertidal seashore with biologist Sandra Milligan (see below), who will lead a journey of discovery to the tip of the real Willow Point. The walk will look closely at all that “seaweed” and discover dozens of animals and algae, from crabs and chitons, to gastropods and gumboot chitons. We’ll hone our observational skills to find the most elegant of intertidal life: the opalescent nudibranch and the flexible arm brittle stars. Once you know the names of your new friends, we’ll discover the amazing strategies they’ve developed to live in this challenging environment. It will be a day to remember and an investment for future enjoyment of intertidal life. Dress for the weather, including rubber boots and a spirit for adventure. The next date is Tuesday, June 15 from 11:00am to 1:00pm. Cost is $10.00 per person. Call the Museum at 287-3103 to register.
Sandra Milligan teaches university level Biology at North Island College covering diverse topics from biochemistry to ecology. She has a seamless life as a life-long learner. As such, she may be found learning about nutrition and muscle physiology by training for triathlons, about invertebrates by tidepooling, about bird populations by listening to bird song on a walk, about plant anatomy and physiology while maintaining her large food and flower garden, and about ecology while volunteering in local stream stewardship activities. Mostly, she loves Campbell River’s natural beauty and is happy to share her appreciation for this area with willing eyes and ears.
